The all-new Octavia is here and has moved its dwindling executive sedan segment further upmarket. With prices starting at Rs 24.99 lakh (ex showroom), it has put some distance between itself and its only remaining rival, the Hyundai Elantra, but then it has grown in size, space, features and luxury too. It's now powered by a 190hp 2.0 TSI turbo petrol engine and a 7 speed DSG dual clutch auto (a 1.5 TSI and a manual gearbox are expected to follow), and the diesel engine is no more. If you look hard enough, you might still find an example of the scintillating, old-generation Octavia RS245, but it too comes at a hefty price.

The Octavia builds on its predecessors strengths - tough build, European quality, strong and high-tech powertrain, huge cabin and boot space and excellent driving dynamics - and it's all wrapped in a much sharper suit this time around. Overall, the features and tech have been given an upgrade too, but there are, interestingly, still a few items missing. The hard pill potential buyers will have to swallow is the price, which is far greater than it used to be and in an all-new league now. As ever with Skoda, loyalists know that what you pay for is a full-on luxury car at a relatively lower price, and as things stand, thats what the new Octavia still delivers.
