The Kicks is Nissan’s funky take on the midsize SUV. It’s stylish and different in looks but is a rugged and tough SUV at its core. The Nissan Kicks is offered in India with two petrol engines - a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated engine and a 1.3-litre turbocharged engine. While the turbo petrol version is available with manual and CVT gearbox options, the 1.5 petrol comes only with a manual gearbox. Nissan no longer offers the 1.5 diesel the car was launched with.

The Nissan Kicks is attractive and deftly blends traditional SUV and new-age crossover proportions. It’s got an inviting cabin as well. The dash is neat and there are some premium touches though some scratchy plastics drag things down. Drivers will have to contend with ergonomic issues, such as a narrow footwell, while rear seat occupants will find their backrest a bit too upright. Space at the back is good but not best-in-class.
The Nissan Kicks’ 106hp, 1.5-litre petrol engine is smooth and refined, and offers reasonable performance for average city commutes. A smooth-shifting gearbox and light clutch also make the petrol Kicks a friendly urban SUV. The new 156hp 1.3 Turbo petrol engine, however, is the pick of the range, with its ample torque (you won't miss that diesel so much) and the option of a smooth and convenient CVT gearbox. The Kicks’ steering does call for some effort at parking speeds and there is also some kickback from the steering at high speeds. Where the Nissan Kicks scores big is in ride comfort. The Nissan is unfazed by potholes of any size and just feels like it’s built to take a beating.

The 1.5 petrol engine is smooth and gets the job done, but as it's only available in the two lowest trims, it's best only if you're on a strict budget. The ideal powertrain combination is the 1.3 Turbo Petrol with the CVT auto, which offers performance, convenience and good fuel economy. Of the variants, we recommend the XV Premium as it comes at not too great a premium over the XV variant. All variants of the Nissan Kicks are great value in comparison to their Korean competition.
