The EQS is the first-ever full-electric series production model by Mercedes-Benz. The EV sedan is available in standard (and locally assembled) 580 4Matic and imported, range-topping AMG 53 forms. The AMG EQS 53 produces 649hp in its standard form whereas models fitted with Dynamic Plus package make 751hp in Race Start mode. The EQS 580 is no slouch either, producing 385hp and 855Nm of torque. Both versions of the EQS packs a 400V, 107.8kWh lithium-ion battery that can be charged at speeds of up to 200kW, and while the 53 has a global WLTP rated 586km of range, the EQS 580 has been rated by ARAI for India at 857km of range.

The two flavours of EQS, despite their seemingly similar mechanical make-up, are considerably different propositions. The AMG EQS 53 is hugely expensive, but offers up serious performance numbers comparable to rivals from Porsche and Tesla. But unless that is of utmost priority, it’s hard not to opt for the locally assembled EQS 580 instead, which costs nearly Rs 1 crore less! It too offers considerable performance, and virtually all the same trappings and tech. Two highlights here are rear-wheel steering for incredible manoeuvrability, and the 56-inch ‘Hyperscreen’, 3-screen infotainment system. You will, however, have to be very careful about scraping the battery pack on speed breakers, even with the air suspension raised. The 580’s huge range should be a big draw too, as is the inherent refinement that comes with an EV. And above all else, its priced lower than even an S-class.
Yes, the Mercedes Benz EQS is an electric vehicle or EV, and is the electric counterpart to the Mercedes S class.
The Mercedes Benz EQS 580's 107.8kWh battery takes 10 hours to charge on an 11kW AC charger and 30 mins to charge on a 200kW DC fast charger.
The Mercedes Benz EQS 580 has an ARAI certified range of 857 kilometres in India.
The Mercedes Benz EQS 580 costs Rs 1.55 crore (ex showroom) while the AMG EQS 53 costs Rs 2.45 crore in India.
